Not only have I always loved and owned dogs, but birds have also always been part of my life. I have an aviary at the moment with a variety of, mostly cockatiels and budgies. I also have a very tame cockatiel (Oscar) indoors, that was hand reared, because he was being attacked in the nest. I also have two canaries, which sing lovely , but are vey noisy indoors, so soon will be going to join my sisters aviary with all her canaries. My earliest memory of a bird was a wild Thrush, that we named Goldie. My Mum had rescued it from the cold, and we fed it with worms. We kept it in with our chickens. One day I came home from school to find Goldie had gone, My Mum said it had flown out while she was feeding the chickens. But really she had let it go , as she felt it to cruel to keep it shut up. I think the constant digging for worms did't help. She was very upset, becuase she knew I was upset too. The following Spring we had a VERY TAME Thrush in the garden, which my Mum insisted was Goldie(Who knows if it was ,or not?) The next thing I remember were our chickens. One very snowy winter (a rare occurence for us) my Mum and Dad were both in hospital,so our elder brother came to look after us. Well when he got to us , he was greeted with a coal-house full of chickens. We had brought them in from the cold.I can't understand why he made us take them back. The next thing were three memorable birds. I was married to my first husband and lived near a farm. The first bird was a Jackdaw, that I found while riding my bike through the woods. I took him home and fed him, and left him in a cage in the garage for two days. We then decided he was strong enough to be set free, so off he flew to the trees. We then went out two hours later, and called out "Jack" and to our amazement he flew down to an outstretched arm. A few weeks later a white dove appeared on our children`s bedroom window, who was also friendly.About the same time a PEACOCK was found feeding with the chickens, he had come from 3 miles away and used to roost in the trees. Then of course there was "Woody", The very tame wood pigeon, that my present husband had rescued from falling out of his nest. I hand reared her and she became so tame. She ate from the dog bowl with the dogs and cat, came for walks with me ............the cat came too. She would even get in my bath and the washing up bowl.
I also had two ducks and a bantam that I cracked out of their shells,so they thought of me as their MUM. Then that leaves me with Oscar, our cockatiel, that thinks it`s human. He comes out at night, he doesn't like flying much, just likes to sit on somebody`s lap or preferably their head! to have his head tickled. Oscar gave us a surprise this week (18/5/03) by laying an egg! we thought she must have been a male as she did these lovely "Wolf Whistles" I was told that females don`t normally do this! So she is now known as Oscarette!!
I'm sure she will not be my last bird.............there will be more!!
Well yes, sure enough, Oscarette certainly was not the last, this year 2005, I bought a very pretty pair of Rosa Bourkes to go in my new aviary. But this week December 2005, my all time favourite bird, a beautiful baby African Grey Parrot became my latest addition. We think it is probably a male bird, as it doesn't like men very much, we named him George, as Babe didn't really suit him. He is already talking and whistling and very much part of the family. |
